Honors 1000 taught me about the history and current state of Detroit as an American city. I learned the reasons as to why Detroit collapsed in the first place along with ways in which the city can be rebuilt. I was also taught about urban form, the movement from urbanization to suburbanization, and "ways of seeing". Although the focus of the course was Detroit, these concepts were also related to other cities such as Paris. We discussed how the two cites were different and what made them alike.
In Honors 1000, we also had "passport events" where we visited places in Detroit that related to our current discussion and readings in class. This was a very helpful tool in the learning and understanding of the material. Being able to see an example of the concepts I was learning was a useful way for me to remember and fully grasp them.
This course will help me in future school goals by teaching me proper research techniques such as where to find reliable sources and teaching me how to relate things that I have learned to things that I see in life. Honors 1000 will also help me in future careers by helping me to write my application more professionally.

Reflection on Honors - P S 1010
P S 1010 has helped me develop skills that will help me in the future in many aspects of my life. The ability to work in a group atmosphere is one skill that will benefit me greatly. Although I have always been a very social person, I can now appreciate the benefits of doing group work, like our project. The group work in P S 1010 was a scary concept to me at the beginning of the semester. I am a very particular and individual person and have a very difficult time allowing another individual, let alone five, help me do something I will be evaluated on. However, throughout the semester I have really grown to appreciate group activities and assignments. My group was made up of all incredibly intelligent and hard-working individuals and this changed my view on group work. I now see that having other people working toward the same goal and sharing the same interests can be unbelievably helpful in completing research and understanding the different viewpoints to a problem. Different people within my group had contrasting views on specific points that we came across in our research and this was helpful because it forced me to think on a more in depth level during my research and writing process.
P S 1010 has also taught me a great deal about specific problems that are relevant to the Detroit area. Personally, I did my research and group project on the issue of animal testing, with a focus on the Wayne State animal research done under Dr. O’Leary. My group’s findings truly horrified me. It was a life changing realization that although policies may be in place, they are not always followed or enforced. I found that I am greatly interested in the topic of animal welfare and I will definitely continue to volunteer and work to end animal testing here at Wayne State University. My group and I volunteered at DAWG – The Detroit Animal Welfare Group, located in Romeo, Michigan. The group works to rescue animals that have been abandoned or mistreated in the Detroit area and rehabilitate them in order to find them new and loving homes. Making a difference in the life of an animal that has had a rough start was an incredible experience.
Lastly, P S 1010 taught me that I can make a difference in my community. The course helped me learn to act as an agent by being active within society, and to operate against the cultural norms and structures that I experience within my life. Just through the research and service that I have completed throughout the semester, I have discovered that I am strongly interested in spreading the word about public issues and what the people around me can do to make a difference. In the past, I have avoided politics and becoming involved with the issues that surround me. P S 1010 has helped me to realize that I do not want to just ignore these types of problems any longer and that I want to do my part to better society! Overall it was a great experience and it was incredible to see the work that my group could do, as well as to see the work that has been accomplished by the other groups in the class.
